What drew you into a career as a dance teacher? Tell us a little about your journey.

Born in Dun-Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, Ireland from an early age I had a passion for dance especially for classical ballet, teaching ballet was nothing but a natural progression for me at an early age, being able to share my passion, dedication, patience, and professionalism gave me that experience to communicate and teach students of all abilities. Having a very keen eye for correct body alignment strengthened my proficiency to teach technique in other diverse dance styles from beginner to advance level including Competitions and examinations.

My professional RAD teaching standards gave me many opportunities to teach overseas. I seized the occasion with open arms and taught in America at an Elite Performing Arts Summer school.  The following year I was presented an opportunity to become ‘Head of department in dance’. I certainly enjoyed the challenge.

The key requirements that come with teaching, motivated and inspired me to open up my own dance studio in Ireland, whilst still teaching at other dance studios around Dublin, Bray & Arklow.

In 1989 I migrated to Australia. In 1990 to date –  I once again became a dance studio owner in Victoria Melbourne, also currently a freelance classical ballet teacher at Patricks School of the Arts Melbourne (PSA)

I’m still very passionate about passing on my extensive knowledge and love of classical ballet. Being a Registered lifelong RAD learner plays an important role in my continued dance educational process.

Why did you choose the RAD?

I reminisce and get nostalgic for the old RAD syllabus, walking down memory lane, I remember the free enchainment’s, Rhythm and character work, Birdcage, Breton, Italian tarantella dance then lastly the Senior Grade before Majors.

RAD Ballet became a huge part of my life growing up. I had amazing RAD teachers both in Ireland and England, including guest teachers /examiners from all over the world.  You had to be extremely self-disciplined to continue forward as a professional dancer/ teacher.  This skill is often unrecognized but never goes unrewarded.

I’m passionate about the RAD and chose to be involved as I was eager for my students to participate in the Royal Academy of Dance exams, The Royal Ballet School’s Summer intensive courses, RAD workshops, and the RAD awards/ scholarships that were offered.

The RAD provided me with a syllabus which outlined a progressive structure for learning and achievement. It set a high standard in classical ballet and connected me with the world of dance, in addition to a global support network.

Over the years the RAD has offered me many opportunities as an examiner, mentor on the CBTS, and guiding Workshops. I believe, I truly belong to an international organisation that has a long and distinguished history both in training and educating dance teachers. We are a distinguished community of teachers connected through a ‘ Passion for Dance’ and teaching.

I’m privileged and honoured to have attained my life RAD register membership.

The 2019 Genée International Ballet Competition held in Toronto Canada was unquestionably a highlight of that year. I was fortunate enough to have been in a position to travel and accompany my student to Toronto. Guidance was offered throughout the whole process. It was an impressive atmosphere present throughout the Genée event, the sense of camaraderie between the candidates and teachers showed a wonderful sense of unity and goodwill towards one another. An incredible opportunity for young aspiring dancers and teachers alike.

Teaching  Highlight: Maintaining a  high standard in all  RAD examinations. Dance school success rate Distinction 98%-100%

Another particular highlight : Due to the current climate it was an exciting time to say goodbye to my daughter Roisin on Saturday 18 September.  Her dream as a professional dancer became a reality once again in America. COVID-19 didn’t dampen her drive to continue as a performer/artist. I am a proud/relieved mum and teacher.
