Happy 100th Birthday to the Royal Academy of Dance!

The RAD has reached a huge milestone globally in 2020 with 100 years of teaching the world to dance.

Formed in 1920, the Association of Operatic Dancing in the UK was born out of a desire to create a standardised training programme for dancers. Five leading professional dancers at the time nominated Adeline Genée as the Association's first President and that same year the Association announced its first international ballet syllabus. The following year the first student exams were taken.

100 years later and The Royal Academy of Dance has over a quarter of a million students worldwide taking exams each year, 13,000 members and 1,000 students undertaking study in our higher education programmes. We are one of the world’s leading dance education organisations.
