Outline 

This interactive 1-hour workshop will provide teachers the tools and knowledge to continue to encourage the students to work efficiently and effectively en pointe. Teachers will be provided with detailed instructions and work with the physiotherapist through a series of strengthening exercises that focus on pelvis &and hips, groin, calves and feet. It will cover the most common injuries that can occur with pointe work and their signs and symptoms. Participants will require space enough to complete practical exercises, a barre (or similar support), exercise band (and/or loop) and a mat for floorwork. 

Aims 

The aims of this workshop are to: 

  • Provide teachers with an understanding of the common injuries that may occur en pointe 
  • Use an interactive format to demonstrate and practice strength-based exercises for all students who are en pointe 
  • Demonstrate and teach a series of useful exercises targeting the core, thoracic area, adductors, gluteals and lower leg 
  • Enable teachers to gain practical experience of each exercise to utilise with their students in class 

Learning Outcomes 

On completion of the workshop, you will: 

  • Have an increased understanding of the signs and symptoms that may occur with pointe work 
  • Be able to demonstrate strength exercises for the lower leg and the upper body (calf, hamstrings, quadriceps, gluteals, thoracic spine and shoulder girdle) 
  • Be able to teach a variety of exercises and understand how they link to pointe work
