Boys in Dance: Negotiating Adolescence (Online)

This interactive webinar will review the physical, social, and emotional development of boys. We will consider these changes within the context of dance training and explore some of the challenges boys may face and how we can best support them. 

Aims 

The aims of this interactive webinar are to: 

  • Improve knowledge and understanding of physical maturation in boys, 
  • Improve knowledge and understanding of social and emotional development in boys, 
  • Explore the challenges for adolescent boys in dance, and 
  • Equip participants with the skills to better support adolescent boys in dance. 

Learning Outcomes 

On completion of this interactive webinar, participants will have: 

  • An increased understanding of physical, social and emotional development in boys, 
  • A greater understanding of the challenges adolescent boys may face in dance, and 
  • Considered how to support adolescent boys in the dance studio.

Tutor  

Dr Siobhan Mitchell 

Siobhan trained vocationally as a dancer before completing a BA Hons in Dance Studies, an MSc in Dance Science, and an MRes in Health and Wellbeing. Siobhan completed her doctorate in 2018 and currently works as a Research Fellow in Child and Adolescent Health. Siobhan’s doctoral research explored the psychological and social implications of pubertal timing in adolescent ballet dancers. More recently, Siobhan founded the GuiDANCE Network, a collaboration which aims to enhance practices in the dance sector around growth and development. Siobhan is passionate about education on adolescent development and delivers workshops for dance teachers, students and parents.
