The Fonteyn – 2021
The Royal Academy of Dance has reimagined The Fonteyn to ensure that we can offer candidates a rich and inspiring experience in 2021.
We are delighted that coaching for the inaugural Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition will allow more dancers to benefit from The Fonteyn experience. Dancers will receive 1 hour of personal one-on-one coaching of their Classical and Dancer’s Own Variations, online, without leaving their home town. At the final of the competition, candidates will receive more coaching, learn a newly choreographed solo and perform on stage for our judges. Details for the finals – to be held in London in late 2021 – will be provided as soon as they are available. Read more.
Meet our coaches
Our panel of coaches to guide candidates through their online sessions will continue to grow, but we are delighted to announce: RAD Artistic Director Gerard Charles, Leanne Benjamin OBE AM, Hilary Clark ARAD (dip PDTC) RTS, David Nixon OBE, Janek Schergen and Lynn Wallis OBE. Find out more.
Our hybrid model of online and face-to-face delivery aims to stay true to the creative and collaborative ethos of the competition. However it will add a more accessible and personalised coaching element, whilst still offering Finalists the chance to perform on stage.
Are you eligible?
For 2021, we have expanded the eligibility criteria to enable more young dancers to enter. Current members aged between 15 and 20, holding Advanced 1 with Distinction, can enter for online coaching. The fee for entry to this stage of the competition is £130 per candidate. Find out more.
Once dancers have received their online coaching, and have had a chance to work further on their solos, they will be asked to submit video recordings of their Classical Variation and Dancer’s Own. The videos will be assessed by a judging panel, chaired by RAD President, Dame Darcey Bussell.
The judges will select up to 16 Finalists (and up to 5 reserve Finalists). We aim to invite the Finalists to travel to London to take part in 3 days of in-person coaching, and to compete on stage at a London theatre (details to be confirmed) in late 2021. The fee for Finalists is £800 per candidate, and includes accommodation, all meals, and coaching and learning experiences. Find out more.
